A University of Limpopo legal expert and #SmallClaimsCourt Commissioner in Mankweng and Seshego, Obed Matlaila says increasing the Small Claims Court monetary jurisdiction from R20,000 to R30,000 will improve access to affordable justice for people in Limpopo. Justice and Constitutional Development Minister has approved the increase which takes effect from the 1st of August 2026. Matlaila says the Small Claims Court offers a quick, inexpensive and user-friendly process where members of the public represent themselves without lawyers. He says claimants should provide evidence, such as written agreements or proof of payment, but the court may also considers disputes based on verbal agreements where appropriate. Matlaila says Small Claims Courts commonly deal with matters involving unpaid loans, unpaid services, damaged property and disputes over the sale of goods, making them accessible for everyday civil claims. He says government should consider increasing the jurisdiction to R50,000 while appointing more qualified commissioners to strengthen access to justice and improve the court's capacity. TN
